These are the five films that have been my favorite of what I've recently seen. A wonderful short list here Jeffrey, certainly not one of them dips below the first rank. I guess my absolute favorite of these is the humanist Ozu, I WAS BORN.....BUT (which just had a two-week run here at the IFC in Manhattan) and that moving McCarey, MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW. But I would actually say the Denis is a near-masterpiece as well, (that restaurant sequence is extraordinary) and FREAKS and THE AWFUL TRUTH are cinematic milestones. It's a wonderfully diverse group too!
